History

Kamptee, a satellite town of Nagpur was known for military establishment and tobacco related industries for a long time. The town is also known all over India as a breeding place for footballers. Many players of the town have represented the country in football. Rai Bahadur D. Laxminarayan who donated all his earning and property to Nagpur University also belonged to this place. But the town had very little educational culture in mid fifties.

In the year 1965, Seth Nemkumarji Porwal, an industrialist, started a college in the name of his father late Seth Kesarimal Porwal in Kamptee town. The college started running under the auspices of Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Kamptee chaired by Seth Nemkumarji Porwal. In the year 1970, the college was shifted to the present site with courses in Arts & Commerce faculties. In the year 1971, the Science faculty was also started.

With the introduction of 10+2+3 pattern of State Government, the College Management built a new building for accommodating Junior College Students. With the passage of time, new subjects such as Microbiology, Bio-Chemistry, Electronics, Computer Science, and Information Technology were started at under graduate level and post graduate courses in commerce and economics were introduced. In the last few years various P.G. courses in subjects like Chemistry, Microbiology and Information Technology and Sociology were started. The college added BBA and B.Com. Computer application courses in commerce faculty form the 2008-09 session. The college has also started B.A. and B.Com courses under the auspicious of YCMOU, Nashik.

The faculty in the college is one of the best with about 35 Ph.D degree holders. The teachershave been holding prestigious posts in University like Dean of faculty, Senate members, Academic Council members, faculty members, Chairman, Board of Studies etc. They are also associated with various social and educational bodies and take part in various constructive work in addition to routine teaching work.

Former Principal Dr. M.N. Ghoshal has been conferred with ”Ideal Principal Award” by RTM Nagpur University, ”Eminent Educationist Award” by International Institute of Education and Management, New Delhi and National Integration Fellowship Award by Akhil Maharashtra Patrakar Va Patralekhak Sangh, Mumbai. Shri D.J. Wandhare, Sr. Clerk for being conferred with “Best Non-Teaching Staff” among all affiliated colleges by RTM Nagpur University, Nagpur.

The results of the college are always at par with that of RTM Nagpur University result; though we have to accommodate many students with poor academic background. Students of this college have attained position of distinction in various fields.

The college has unique record in the field of sport and games. In the last 50 years the college has won inter collegiate championship in football (Several times) and hockey (Once). It has also an excellent record in the field of Indian games and athletics. A girl student of the college was adjudged the best woman athlete by RTM Nagpur University, Nagpur. One of our ex-students has also won gold medal for the country in Olympiad event for above 35 years of age. Some students of the college have represented Vidharbha team in cricket league in 1999. A new hockey ground has been developed in the college campus, where University matches are conducted.

For teaching and non teaching staff, the College runs Credit Co-operative Society and Consumer Co-operative Society. A pathology lab. renders help to poor people of the town by performing various pathological tests on ‘no profit no loss’ basis.

The college arranges two blood donation camps every year. One is on 28th August to commemorate the death of late Shri Rakeshkumar Porawl, Ex Vice –President of SPM and the second on 24th September, on the occasion of NSS establishment day celebration. The inter collegiate debate competition organized by the college is very popular in the jurisdiction of RTM Nagpur University and this program is organized for the last 39 years on the occasion of Seth Kesarimal Porwal Punyatithi programmed on 7th October every year.

The college library is one of the best in the region with about 50000 selected volumes in different subjects. The science laboratories of the college are well equipped and care has been taken for the maximum utilities of the infrastructure available. Many departments in the college have been sanctioned minor & major research projects by U.G.C. and are at different stages of completion.

In the year 2004, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore has accredited the college with B++ grade [80.5%] marks. In the year 2006, the college was nominated as a lead college by RTM Nagpur University, Nagpur to help five other colleges in the field of academics, research, games and other extra curricular activities.In the year 2010, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore has reaccredited the college with B grade.

The NCC and NSS units of the college are doing yeomen’s service in the field of social work. The NSS unit is organizing camps in villages and educational people there against Social evils. The college has taken steps to introduce Environmental Science subject in all the facilities. The staff, students and alumni members are planting trees in the college campus to give it a green cover and thus improving the environment.

From the 2008-09 session, college has started U.G.C. sponsored “Functional English” certificate course for the benefit of rural students. In the year 2014-15 College started UGC sponsored certificate course in Microbial Analysis of food.

The college play ground which is a part of 14.39 acre college campus can accommodate a 400 m Track with a football ground within it. Porwal Cricket Academy and Porwal Hockey Academy have been formed to coach youngsters from the town in the college campus to achieve greater success in the games in future.

This is one of the few colleges in Maharashtra which has two separate buildings for Junior and Degree College in the same campus. The Junior College also conducts classes in vocational subjects, Electronics and Fresh Water Fish Culture in science faculty. All the laboratories in Junior College are well equipped.

Since the foundation of Seth Kesarimal Porwal College, it never faced a setback. It is constantly and steadily growing from strength scaling higher and higher peaks of success and glory due to the moral and financial support extended by Shri Sunil kumar Porwal, Chairman, Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Kamptee.

At present, the college is going ahead with complete co-ordination among management, principal, staff members and students. All arestriving hard to make it the best temple of learning in this region.
